Nach dem Tod eines Kollegen übernehmen die Wissenschaftler Robert Jones und Frank Enari die Arbeit auf einer 4300 Meter hoch gelegenen, von Schnee bedeckten und von der Außenwelt isolierten Forschungsstation. Dort führen sie zur Verhaltensforschung diverse Experimente wie Unterkühlung, Futterentzug und Isolation an Schimpansen durch. Schon bald ereignen sich seltsame Zwischenfälle, jeder verdächtigt den anderen.
