Während Kellnerin Tiana im New Orleans der Jahrhundertwende mit eiserner Disziplin ihren Lebenstraum verfolgt – ein eigenes Restaurant zu eröffnen – taucht der adrette Prinz Naveen in der Jazzmetropole auf. Durch eine Verkettung unglücklicher Umstände und unter tatkräftiger Mithilfe des boshaften Voodoo-Zauberers Dr. Facilier wird aus der charmanten Arbeitsbiene und dem naiven Adligen ein Froschpaar. Auf der Suche nach einem Gegenmittel begeben sich die beiden auf Abenteuerreise in die Sümpfe Louisianas. Begleitet werden sie vom Trompete spielenden Alligator Louis und dessen Sidekick Ray, einem in Liebesdingen versierten Glühwürmchens.
