Nachdem die letzte Schlacht geschlagen ist, ist der Krieg auf der Halbinsel für die Briten und ihre Alliierten nun endlich vorbei, doch Sharpe hat noch weiter zu kämpfen.. Sein langjähriger Feind Ducos unterstellt ihm, er habe Napoleons Schätze gestohlen. Sharpe wird auch von seiner Frau Jane verlassen, die nach England zurückkehrt und dort den gutaussehenden Lord Rossendale trifft. Auf der Flucht vor sowohl den Engländern als auch den Franzosen muss Sharpe nun seine Unschuld beweisen.
