Nach dem tragischen Tod seiner Frau entdeckt Architekt Jonathan Rivers die unheimliche Wissenschaft des „Electronic Voice Phenomenon“ (EVP) – der Prozess, mit dem die Toten mit den Lebenden kommunizieren: über Stimmen und Bilder im statischen, weißen Rauschen elektronischer Geräte. Mit Hilfe des Sonderlings Price, der solche Botschaften aus dem Totenreich systematisch analysiert, gelingt es Jonathan, Kontakt mit seiner Frau Anna aufzunehmen. Und die warnt ihn: Kontakt zu suchen ist eine Sache, sich einzumischen eine andere. Schon bald wird ihm klar, dass niemand kontrollieren kann, was hinter der Tür zum Jenseits lauert …
