Die junge Maus Celestine lebt verborgen in einer unterirdischen Stadt, die von allen möglichen Nagetieren bewohnt wird. Obwohl sie das Zeichnen liebt, muss sie bald damit beginnen, Zahnheilkunde zu studieren, den Beruf den alle Mäuse eines Tages ausüben. Als Vorbereitung wird ihr die Aufgabe gestellt, an der Oberfläche die ausgefallenen Zähne junger Bären zu sammeln. Als sie bei einem ihrer Raubzüge von einer wütenden Bären-Familie auf frischer Tat ertappt wird, kann sie sich gerade noch in einen alten Abfalleimer retten, in dem sie vor lauter Furcht die ganze Nacht verbringt. Als sie am nächsten Morgen von einem hungrigen Bären namens Ernest gefunden wird, kann sie ihn gerade noch davon abhalten, sie auf der Stelle zu fressen. Aus dem zufälligen Aufeinandertreffen entwickelt sich eine innige Freundschaft, die jedoch nicht bei allen auf Akzeptanz stößt.
