Der junge Landadlige Ponceludon will bei Louis XVI. um Hilfe für seine verarmten Bauern bitten. Doch es ist schwer eine Anhörung beim König zu bekommen. Ponceludon muss sich gnadenlos den Machtspielen am Versailler Hof unterordnen, um sich nicht der Lächerlichkeit preiszugeben.
