Auf Riverworld wurde von Unbekannten ein gewaltiger, sich von Pol zu Pol schlängelnder Fluss angelegt. Am Ufer dieses Flusses werden alle Menschen wiedererweckt, die seit der Steinzeit bis heute auf der Erde gelebt haben und auf ihr gestorben sind. Die Flusswelt beherbergt außer Würmern und einigen Fischarten keinerlei Tiere. Seine Bewohner müssen ihr tägliches Brot aber auch nicht mehr selbst beschaffen, es wird ihnen serviert. In ihrem persönlichen Materieumwandler. Eine kleine Gruppe von Flussweltlern bricht zum Nordpol auf, um dort – im Hauptquartier von Riverworld – die Erbauer des Planeten zu stellen. Forschungsleiter Richard Francis Burton ist als einziger vorzeitig erweckt worden und weiß somit um das Geheimnis dieser künstlichen Welt. Denn: Riverworld beinhaltet einen tieferen Sinn und steht zudem unter der rätselhaften und mächtigen Kontrolle der so genannten 'Caretaker'...
