1898 veröffentlichte H. G. Wells seinen mittlerweile zu den absoluten Klassikern zählenden Roman „Der Krieg der Welten“. Die Geschichte einer außerirdischen Invasion war die erste ihrer Art, begründete das moderne Science-Fiction-Genre und verankerte die Figur des Marsmenschen in der kollektiven Vorstellungswelt. Wells Roman wurde tausendfach zitiert, für die Bühne, das Radio und die Leinwand adaptiert – und warnt wie eine düstere Prophezeiung bis heute vor der blinden Fortschrittsgläubigkeit der modernen Welt.
