Auf Messers Schneide (1984)
Larry Darell, ein junger Amerikaner, erlebt den bestialischen und grauenvollen Ersten Weltkrieg an der vordersten Front. Der Krieg hat aus dem Sonnyboy einen ernsthaften Mann gemacht, der sich auf den Weg macht – fernab vom satten Lebensstil seines Zuhauses – das Leben kennenzulernen. Seine erste Station führt ihn nach Paris. Seine Freundin Isabelle folgt ihm dabei auf Schritt und Tritt. Es kommt zum Bruch zwischen den beiden. Larry zieht sich völlig zurück und sucht die Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens aus Büchern. Bis ihn ein Freund nach Indien schickt. Bei indischen Mönchen findet Larry endlich die von ihm ersehnte Ruhe und erhält mit Hilfe des Lamas Zugang zu höheren Sphären. Zurück in Paris, verliebt sich Larry in seine Jugendliebe Sophie, inzwischen eine Prostituierte. Aber Sophie wird grausam ermordet.
