"Die Liebenden" ist Louis Malles zweiter Film mit Jeanne Moreau. Wegen seiner für die 1950er Jahre gewagten Freizügigkeit löste er heftige Proteste aus und durfte nur in einer gekürzten und entschärften Version gezeigt werden.
