Die Atombombe, die 1945 auf Hiroshima fiel, tötete mehr als 100.000 Menschen und symbolisierte das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs, aber auch den Beginn des Atomzeitalters. Von da an bekamen bewaffnete Konflikte, internationale Beziehungen und Sicherheitspolitik einen völlig neuen Charakter. Der Dokumentarfilm schildert die Ereignisse vor, während und nach der Detonation und erzählt anhand von Berichten der letzten Überlebenden die Geschichte dieses Wendepunktes mitten im 20. Jahrhundert. Er beleuchtet auch die langfristigen Folgen des Atomwaffenabwurfs in Hiroshima und weltweit.
