Stanley und Iris (1990)
Als die Witwe Iris überfallen wird, kommt ihr der eigenbrötlerische Koch Stanley zu Hilfe. Zwischen den alleinstehenden Mittvierzigern beginnt eine wechselhafte Freundschaft. Binnen kurzem bemerkt Iris, daß Stan ein Analphabet ist. Als er seinen Job verliert, und als er den Namen seines just verstorbenen Vaters nicht buchstabieren kann, beschließt Stan, das Lesen zu erlernen. Iris unterstützt ihn dabei tatkräftig mit Unterrichtsstunden sowie Büchereibesuchen und überwindet dabei mit Hilfe Stans, der rasch einen besseren Job bekommt, ihr Witwendasein.
