Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)
Aufgewachsen in einem konservativen Vorort auf Long Island beginnt Robert Mapplethorpe noch während des Kunststudiums sein ausschweifendes Leben in der New Yorker Underground- und Fetisch-Szene zu dokumentieren. Es ist die Zeit von Andy Warhols Factory, von Disco-Rock, der Schwulenbewegung und offen zur Schau gestellter Sexualität. Mit Patti Smith an seiner Seite erobert Mapplethorpe die New Yorker Kunstszene. Was noch niemand ahnt: Seine skandalumwitterten Arbeiten werden stilprägend für die moderne Fotografie genauso wie für die schwule Ästhetik der kommenden Jahrzehnte. Auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Popularität erkrankt Mapplethorpe an Aids. Zu der Zeit aber beginnt die US-Justiz, sich für Mapplethorpes freizügige Arbeiten zu interessieren.
