Romain Gary wird in Litauen geboren, in einer Zeit, als Nazideutschland ganz Europa bedroht. Eines Tages kommt es zum schicksalhaften Ereignis und die deutsche Armee marschiert in Romains Heimatland Polen ein, wo er mit seiner Mutter Nina lebt. In dunkler Vorahnung, was ihnen drohen könnte, fliehen er und seine Familie in Richtung Frankreich, in der Hoffnung, den Nazis zu entkommen. In seiner neuen Heimat Nizza schließt sich Romain schließlich den Widerstandskämpfern an, um so einen Beitrag im Kampf gegen den Faschismus leisten zu können. Später wird er während des Zweiten Weltkriegs Pilot in Afrika. Nach Kriegsende führt Romains Karriere als Diplomat ihn anschließend um die ganze Welt, wobei er die amerikanische Schauspielerin Jean Seberg kennenlernt...
