Nachdem Claire gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann Aaron in das Haus zieht, in dem sie einst aufgewachsen ist, plagen sie schreckliche Erinnerungen an ihre Kindheit. Vor allem ihre gewalttätige Mutter machte ihr das Leben damals zur Hölle und traumatisierte sie nachhaltig. Inmitten dieser verschwommenen Erinnerungen stößt bald ein weiterer Geist aus der Vergangenheit zurück in Claires leben: Die imaginäre Freundin Bethany, zu der Claire als Kind immer Zuflucht suchte.
