In den Weiten Montanas, auf einer Ranch, lebt Colonel Ludlow mit seinen drei Söhnen. Es ist die Zeit kurz vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Der Jüngste, Sam, ein Harvard-Absolvent, hat sich verliebt und bringt seine Braut auf die Ranch, um sie der Familie vorzustellen. Doch von dem Tag an wird alles anders – denn auch seine Brüder verlieben sich in die schöne, leidenschaftliche Frau. Als die drei Söhne in den Krieg ziehen und Sam die Schlacht nicht überlebt, nehmen die harten Prüfungen der Familie ihren Lauf.
