Spencer Northcut überlebte als Dreikäsehoch mit Ach und Krach die Attacke eines prähistorischen Riesenhais auf die familiäre Segelyacht, musste jedoch den Tod seiner Eltern mit ansehen und wuchs darob zu einem ernsthaften Ozeanologen mit schwer unterdrückten Rachegefühlen heran. Als bei einer neuerlichen Attacke eine Untersee-Forschungsstation vom "Megalodon" dem Meeresboden gleich gemacht wird, entdeckt die Regierung den Forscher und finanziert ihm eine submarine Jagdexpedition.
