Die hochbegabte Max Winslow und vier weitere Teenager bekommen von dem mysteriösen Unternehmer und Wissenschaftler Atticus Virtue die Chance ihres Lebens. Denn sie alle sollen in einem Wettbewerb gegen einen Supercomputer namens HAVEN antreten, der das gesamte Anwesen Virtues kontrolliert. Wer das virtuelle Spiel gegen die künstliche Intelligenz gewinnt, dem sind nicht nur Ehre und Respekt des Veranstalters sicher, sondern auch dessen Anwesen – denn genau das gibt es zu gewinnen! Doch die Jugendlichen müssen schon bald erkennen, dass es das nicht geschenkt gibt. Aus Spiel wird schnell Ernst – und plötzlich befinden sie sich in einem gefährlichen Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.
