Eine formidable Schreibblockade hat den erfolgreichen Autor Charles Condomine fest im Griff, sein neues Drehbuch will ihm einfach nicht von der Hand gehen. Eine Séance der exzentrischen Madame Arcati soll nun für Inspiration sorgen. Statt Kreativitätsschub gibt es jedoch reichlich Chaos, denn das berühmte Medium beschwört den Geist von Charles verstorbener Gattin Elvira herauf - und die macht keine Anstalten, sich wieder ins Jenseits zu verabschieden. Was Charles aktueller und noch quicklebendiger Ehefrau Ruth natürlich gar nicht gefällt!
