Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt, wie ein weitgehend unbekannter Erdnussfarmer aus Georgia 1976 zum 39. US-Präsidenten gewählt wurde und welch entscheidende Rolle dabei die populäre Musik jener Tage spielte. Die enge Freundschaft mit zahlreichen berühmten US-amerikanischen Musikstars gab dem Kandidaten Jimmy Carter ungeahnten Auftrieb bei seinem Wahlkampf und führte ihn schließlich ins Weiße Haus.
