Sharpe soll zusammen mit dem Regiment “South Essex” und Colonel Simmerson eine Brücke sprengen, was aber absolut in die Hose geht, weil einer der Offiziere sich als inkompetent erweist und die Männer absolut kampfunerfahren sind. Simmerson schiebt Sharpe die Schuld an diesem Desaster, bei dem auch die Regimentsflagge verlorengeht, zu, und er muß befürchten, degradiert zu werden. Um sich zu rehabilitieren will er im Kampf gegen die Franzosen einen “goldenen Adler” erobern.
