1813 - Sharpe wird von einem spanischen Marquis zum Duell gefordert, der ihn bezichtigt, seine Frau umworben zu haben. Sharpe protestiert, er kenne die Marquesa nicht und sei unschuldig. Er weigert sich, sich zu entschuldigen. Das Duell findet statt und als Sharpe dem Marquis sein Schwert gegen den Hals drückt, erscheint Nairn und erklärt, dies sei lediglich eine Übung im Schwertkampf gewesen. Später am Abend wird der Marquis ermordet. Daraufhin wird Sharpe verhaftet. Zeugen sagen aus, Sharpe habe den Mord begangen und er wird zum Tode verurteilt. Noch in der gleichen Nacht kommt jedoch Harper zurück, Sharpe und er werden beauftragt, die schöne La Marquesa gefangen zu nehmen, damit die Briten in Erfahrung bringen können, was die Franzosen als nächsten Schritt planen.
