All die schönen Ferienpläne sind dahin, denn Tom's Bruder hat die Masern! Um sich nicht anzustecken, wird Tom zu Onkel und Tante geschickt - in eine kleine Wohnung ohne Garten! Die Verwandten sind zwar nett, aber sie verstehen rein gar nichts davon, was Kinder sich wünschen. So ist Tom unglaublich langweilig und abends liegt er oft stundenlang wach. Doch eines Nachts hört er die alte Standuhr im Erdgeschoss um Mitternacht 13 Mal schlagen. Verwundert steigt er die Treppe hinab und entdeckt, dass die Hintertür plötzlich das Tor zu einer traumhaften Gartenwelt mit Kletterbäumen, zahllosen Verstecken und Hatty, dem Mädchen aus einer anderen Zeit, ist. Aber wer ist eigentlich diese geheimnisvolle Hatty? Und warum kommt sie Tom so bekannt vor?
