Australien, 2020: Als seine Frau Laura bei der Erforschung des Wracks eines britischen Handelsschiffs im Great Barrier Reef in Lebensgefahr gerät, will der Archäologe Jay Fennel sie retten und gerät selbst in eine Notlage und wird hirntot ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert. In seinem traumähnlichen Komazustand reist er zurück ins Indien des Jahres 1778, als die britische East India Company dort das Sagen hatte. Jay schlüpft dort in die Rolle eines jungen Kapitäns namens James Stewart, dem eine gefährliche Mission bevorsteht. Nicht nur das: Er verliebt sich in dieser fremden Zeit und an diesem fremden Ort in die Kriegerin Tulaja, und nur die Macht eines magischen Rings kann diesen raum- und zeitübergreifenden Konflikt auflösen.
