Cantagrel, ein provenzalisches Dorf: Als der Bauer Urbain vom Markt zurückkommt, findet er seine Frau Aurélie erhängt vor. Schnell verbreitet sich die Nachricht von ihrem Tode, und Aurélies Vater verbreitet das Gerücht, Urbain sei der Mörder.
