Eigentlich soll es ein romantisches Picknick werden. Doch dann werden Joe und Claire Zeuge einer Bruchlandung. Ein kleiner Junge ist in einem herrenlosen Heißluftballon gefangen. Joe eilt spontan zur Hilfe, genau wie vier andere Männer. Doch sie können den Ballon nicht halten – und einer von ihnen stürzt in die Tiefe und stirbt. Joe versucht, das Unglück zu vergessen. Doch dann drängt sich Jed in sein Leben, einer der anderen Helfer. Er meint, eine geheime Verbindung zu Joe aufgebaut zu haben und steigert sich so sehr in diese Vorstellung hinein, dass er schließlich Joe das Leben zur Hölle macht.
