Geboren in Huntington Park, Kalifornien. Sein Vater war methodistischer Pfarrer, seine Mutter stellvertretende Schulleiterin der John Adams Junior High School in Los Angeles. Nach 27 Jahren Dienstzeit bei der US-Marine schied er als Kommandant aus. Er hatte seine eigene Fernsehshow in Los Angeles namens „Freedom Forum“ und kandidierte 1946 für den US-Kongress im 46. Wahlbezirk. Er absolvierte die Huntington Park High School und die University of Southern California (USC). Sein letzter Auftritt war in der Fernsehserie „Funny Girl“ als Richter. Er hinterlässt einen Sohn namens John.
