Häuptling John Big Tree wurde am 2. Juni 1877 in Buffalo, New York, als Isaac Johnny John geboren. Er war Schauspieler und bekannt für seine Rollen in „She Wore a Yellow Ribbon“ (1949), „Drums Along the Mohawk“ (1939) und „Devil's Doorway“ (1950). Er starb am 6. Juli 1967 im Onondaga-Indianerreservat im US-Bundesstaat New York. Er war einer von drei Männern, die dem Künstler James Fraser für das Porträt Modell standen, das später als „Indian Head Nickel“ oder „Buffalo Nickel“ (geprägt von 1913 bis 1938) bekannt wurde. Die anderen beiden waren Häuptling Two Moons (Cheyenne) und Häuptling Iron Tail (Lakota-Sioux). Das Bild wurde 2006 für eine spezielle 50-Dollar-Goldmünze – die erste 24-Karat-Goldmünze der USA – wiederverwendet. Big Tree gehörte der Seneca-Nation an.
