John Wray (13. Februar 1887 – 5. April 1940) war ein US-amerikanischer Charakterdarsteller für Bühne und Film. Wray gehörte zu den vielen Broadway-Schauspielern, die nach der Einführung des Tonfilms nach Hollywood strömten und dort schnell einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterließen. Er verkörperte eine Vielzahl anspruchsvoller Charakterrollen, darunter den an Arnold Rothstein erinnernden Gangster in „Der Zar von Broadway“ (1930), Himmelstoss, den sadistischen Ausbilder in „Im Westen nichts Neues“ (1930), und den Schlangenmenschen „Der Frosch“ in der Neuverfilmung von „Der Wundermann“ (1932), in der Rolle, die im Original von 1919 von Lon Chaney gespielt worden war. In dieser Zeit war er einer der vielen Schauspieler, die für die Titelrolle in „Dracula“ (1931) im Gespräch waren. Wrays Rollen wurden im Laufe des Jahrzehnts immer kleiner, doch er war weiterhin präsent, etwa als hungernder Bauer, der Gary Cooper in Frank Capras Klassiker „Mr. Deeds geht in die Stadt“ (1936) mit dem Tod bedroht, und als Gefängnisdirektor in Fritz Langs „Man lebt nur einmal“ (1937). Weitere Filme sind „Doktor X“ (1932), „Ich bin ein entflohener Sträfling“ (1932), „Frisco Kid“ (1935), „Das arme reiche Mädchen“ (1936), „Boys Town“ (1938), „Jeden Morgen sterbe ich“ (1939), „Die Katze und der Kanarienvogel“ (1939) und „Vom Winde verweht“ (1939).
