Es war Lionel Barrymore, der Louis Wolheim den Einstieg in die Schauspielerei ermöglichte. Wolheim hatte sich beim Footballspielen in einem unterklassigen Team der Cornell University schwere Gesichtsverletzungen und einen Nasenbeinbruch zugezogen. Später, als Dozent an der Cornell University, hatte er es nicht leicht. Er arbeitete zwar gelegentlich als Statist im Wharton Studio, erntete aber nie viel Aufmerksamkeit. Barrymore genügte ein einziger Blick, um zu erkennen, dass Wolheims Talent sein Kapital war. Durch Barrymore gelang Wolheim der Einstieg in die New Yorker Theaterwelt. Auf der Bühne feierte er große Erfolge mit Stücken wie „Welcome Wing“ und „The Hairy Ape“, die er mit seinem Triumph in „What Price Glory“ krönte. Louis Wolheim starb am 18. Februar 1931 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, an Magenkrebs.
