Der US-amerikanische Schauspieler und Sohn russisch-jüdischer Einwanderer avancierte ab den 1950er Jahren zu einem der erfolgreichsten Vertreter der internationalen Filmgeschichte. Seit den 1940er Jahren stand Kirk Douglas in über 80 Produktionen in tragenden Rollen vor der Kamera. Seine bedeutendsten Erfolge als Charakterdarsteller hatte er als kalter und skrupelloser Journalist in "Reporter des Satans" (1951) und als Vincent van Gogh im gleichnamigen Film aus dem Jahr 1956. Populär wurde Dougals mit Filmen wie "20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer", "Spartakus", "Der letzte Countdown" und "Archie und Harry". 1996 wurde der große Schauspieler für sein Lebenswerk mit dem Ehren-"Oscar" bedacht... Im Jahr 1994 entstand "Greedy - erben will gelernt sein". 1996 wurde Douglas mit dem Ehren-"Oscar" für sein Lebenswerk bedacht. Diese Auszeichnung dokumentiert unter anderem seine künstlerische Haltung und Praxis, vielfach in Rollen zu schlüpfen, die nicht dem üblichen Amerika-Bild entsprechen. 2001 wurde Kirk Douglas bei den Berliner Filmfestspielen mit dem Ehrenbären bedacht. Zu seinen späten Arbeiten zählt die turbulente Komödie "Diamonds", die im Jahr 2002 in die deutschen Kinos kam und in der Kirk Douglas den agilen 80-jährigen "Harry Agensky" mit seinen Coup-Plänen mimt. 2004 wurde nach ihm in Palm Springs, Kalifornien, eine Strasse benannt; der "Kirk Douglas Way". 2008 stand er für "Mord im Empire State Building" vor der Kamera. Douglas lebte indes mit seiner zweiten Ehefrau zurückgezogen in Kalifornien. Bei der Oscarverleihung 2011 übergab er den Preis für die beste Nebendarstellerin an Melissa Leo.
