Mit über 600 Film- und Fernsehrollen seit 1954 zählt er zu den produktivsten Charakterdarstellern Hollywoods und prägte die asiatisch-amerikanische Filmgeschichte durch ikonische Auftritte wie Hannibal Chew in „Blade Runner“ (1982), David Lo Pan in „Big Trouble in Little China“ (1986), Chi-Fu in „Mulan“ (1998, Stimme) sowie den Großvater Gong Gong im Oscar-prämierten „Everything Everywhere All at Once“ (2022).
