Benjamin spielte zuerst in zahlreichen Theaterstücken, in einigen übernahm er auch die Regie. Bekannt machte ihn die Rolle in der Fernsehserie He & She, für die er im Jahr 1968 für den Emmy Award nominiert wurde. Im Jahr 1970 wurde er für die Rolle in der Komödie Goodbye, Columbus (1969), in der er eine der Hauptrollen spielte, für den Laurel Award nominiert. Für seine Rolle in der Komödie Die Sunny-Boys aus dem Jahr 1975 gewann er 1976 den Golden Globe Award.Benjamin ist seit dem 26. Oktober 1961 mit der Schauspielerin Paula Prentiss verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder.
