John Sidney Blyth Barrymore war ein gefeierter amerikanischer Schauspieler. Er erlangte zunächst als gutaussehender Bühnenschauspieler in leichten Komödien, später in anspruchsvollen Dramen und feierte schließlich mit seinen bahnbrechenden Darstellungen in Shakespeare-Stücken wie Hamlet und Richard III. große Erfolge. Auch im Film setzte er seine Karriere in verschiedenen Genres der Stumm- und Tonfilmära fort. Barrymores Privatleben war vor und nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1942 Gegenstand zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen. Heute ist John Barrymore vor allem für seine Rollen in Filmen wie Dr. Jekyll und Mr. Hyde (1920), Grand Hotel (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Twentieth Century (1934) und Don Juan (1926) bekannt, dem ersten Film überhaupt, der mit einer Vitaphone-Tonspur unterlegt wurde. Als Mitglied einer über Generationen reichenden Theaterdynastie war er der Bruder von Lionel Barrymore und Ethel Barrymore und der Großvater väterlicherseits von Drew Barrymore.
