Merle Oberon, geboren als Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson, war eine britische Schauspielerin anglo-indischer Herkunft. Ihre Karriere erstreckte sich von den 1920er- bis in die 1970er-Jahre, und sie zählte zu den bedeutendsten Hauptdarstellerinnen des Goldenen Zeitalters Hollywoods. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Britisch-Indien, begann sie ihre Schauspielkarriere Anfang der 1930er-Jahre im britischen Kino mit einer herausragenden Rolle in „Das Privatleben Heinrichs VIII.“ (1933). Später zog sie nach Hollywood, wo sie zum internationalen Star avancierte und für Filme wie „Der Weg im Dunkel“ (1935), „Stürmische Höhen“ (1939) und „Ehekomödie“ (1941) gefeiert wurde. Ihre Darstellung der Kitty Vane in „Der Weg im Dunkel“ brachte ihr eine Oscar-Nominierung als Beste Hauptdarstellerin ein.
