Joseph Patrick Carrol Naish (21. Januar 1896 – 24. Januar 1973) war ein US-amerikanischer Charakterdarsteller, geboren in New York City. Naish spielte zahlreiche Filmrollen, doch sein Durchbruch gelang ihm mit der Titelrolle in der Radiosendung „Life with Luigi“ (1948–1953), die 1950 sogar Bob Hope in den Einschaltquoten übertraf. Bevor Naish seine Filmkarriere begann, stand er mehrere Jahre auf der Bühne. Er startete seine Laufbahn als Mitglied von Gus Edwards’ Vaudeville-Truppe, die aus Kinderdarstellern bestand. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg gründete Naish in Paris seine eigene Gesangs- und Tanzgruppe. Er bereiste die Welt – von Europa über Ägypten bis nach Asien –, als sein Schiff auf dem Weg nach China Maschinenprobleme bekam und ihn 1926 in Kalifornien strandete. Seine ungenannte Nebenrolle in „What Price Glory“ (1926) markierte den Beginn seiner Karriere mit über zweihundert Filmen. Er wurde zweimal für den Oscar als Bester Nebendarsteller nominiert, zunächst für seine Rolle in dem Film „Sahara“ (1943) und dann für seine Leistung in dem Film „A Medal for Benny“ (1945), für den er den Golden Globe als Bester Nebendarsteller gewann. Besonders hervorzuheben ist seine Rolle als Boris Karloffs buckliger Assistent in „Frankensteins Haus“ (1944). Er war irischer Abstammung, nutzte seine Dialektkenntnisse jedoch nie, um Iren darzustellen. Er erklärte: „Wenn die Rolle eines Iren angeboten wird, denkt niemand an mich.“ Stattdessen verkörperte er unzählige andere ethnische Gruppen auf der Leinwand: Latinos, Indigene, Ostasiaten, Polynesier, Menschen aus dem Nahen Osten/Nordafrika, Südasiaten, Osteuropäer und Angehörige des Mittelmeerraums. Neben seinen Filmrollen war er später in seiner Karriere auch häufig im Fernsehen zu sehen. Viele seiner späteren Jahre verbrachte er in San Diego, wo er Philosophie und Theologie studierte. Naish war von 1929 bis 1973 mit der Schauspielerin Gladys Heaney (1907–1987) verheiratet. Das Paar hatte eine Tochter. Für seine Verdienste um Film und Fernsehen wurde J. Carrol Naish mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame (6145 Hollywood Boulevard) geehrt.
