Mit einem ausgesprochen vagen Lebenslauf, der laut eigener Aussage Stationen als Nachtclub-Moderator in Las Vegas, Radiomoderator und Juweliermagnat umfasste, und vergleichsweise wenig Schauspielerfahrung, ergatterte Gianni Russo die Rolle des Carlo Rizzi in „Der Pate“ (1972) aufgrund seines Vorsprechens. Seitdem ist Russo als Schauspieler aktiv geblieben und verkörpert zumeist diverse Gangster und Mafiosi. Er war erneut an der Seite von Marlon Brando in einer kleinen Rolle in „Der Freshman“ (1990) zu sehen, in der Brando seine Rolle als Don Corleone wirkungsvoll parodierte.
