Helen Luella Koford, geboren am 7. Januar 1929 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, arbeitete als Model, bevor sie im Alter von elf Jahren in 20th Century Fox' „Maryland“ (1940) ihr Filmdebüt gab. In den 1940er Jahren trat sie unter verschiedenen Namen auf (ihrem eigenen, Judy Ford und January Ford), bevor sie sich 1948 für Terry Moore entschied. Nachdem sie von Columbia unter Vertrag genommen worden war, wurde Moore für einen ihrer bekanntesten Filme, RKOs „Mighty Joe Young“ (1949), an RKO ausgeliehen; für ihre Leistung in Paramounts „Come Back, Little Sheba“ (1952) erhielt sie eine Oscar-Nominierung. In den 1970er Jahren sorgte sie mehr für Schlagzeilen als für Filmauftritte, da sie behauptete, die heimliche Ehefrau des verstorbenen Milliardärs Howard Hughes zu sein. Sie hat in 77 Spielfilmen mitgewirkt und zu ihren Filmpartnern zählen einige der größten Hollywood-Legenden. Darunter Burt Lancaster, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, Glenn Ford, Mickey Rooney und Robert Wagner. Da sie selbst Pilotin war, spielte Terry eine wichtige Rolle bei der Vorbereitung von Leonardo DiCaprio auf seine Darstellung von Howard Hughes in „Aviator“ (2004).
