James Best (geboren als Jewel Franklin Guy; 26. Juli 1926 – 6. April 2015) war ein US-amerikanischer Fernseh-, Film-, Charakter-, Synchron- und Bühnenschauspieler sowie Autor, Regisseur, Schauspiellehrer, Künstler, Hochschulprofessor und Musiker. Seine Karriere umfasste sieben Jahrzehnte im Fernsehen. Er war Gast in verschiedenen Country-Musik- und Talkshows. Er war einer der gefragtesten Schauspieler Hollywoods und begann seine Karriere 1949 bei Universal Studios, wo er unter anderem die damals noch unbekannten Schauspieler Julie Adams, Piper Laurie, Tony Curtis und Rock Hudson kennenlernte. Bests lange Karriere begann 1950 im Filmgeschäft. Er spielte hauptsächlich in Western, unter anderem an der Seite von Audie Murphy in „Kansas Raiders“ (1950), „The Cimarron Kid“ (1952) und „The Quick Gun“ (1964), als Raymond Massey in „Seven Angry Men“ (1955), als George Montgomery in „Last of the Badman“ (1957), als Frank Lovejoy in „Cole Younger Gunfighter“ (1958) und als Randolph Scott in „Ride Lonesome“ (1959). Außerdem spielte er die Hauptrolle in dem Science-Fiction-Kultfilm „The Killer Shrews“ (1959) und dessen Fortsetzung „Return of the Killer Shrews“ (2012). Am bekanntesten ist er jedoch für seine Rolle als tollpatschiger Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in der Actionkomödie „Ein Duke kommt selten allein“, eine Rolle, die er in „Ein Duke kommt selten allein – Wiedersehen!“ neu interpretierte. (1997), als seine Figur nun sowohl der "Boss" von Hazzard County als auch der Sheriff war, und erneut in The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood (2000).
