John Simm wuchs in Nelson, Lancashire, auf. Er besuchte die Edge End High School in Nelson, gefolgt vom Blackpool Drama College (mit 16 Jahren) und dem Drama Centre in London (mit 19 Jahren). Er lebt mit seiner Frau, der Schauspielerin Kate Magowan, und seinen Kindern Ryan (geb. 13. August 2001) und Molly (geb. Februar 2007) zusammen. Für sein Filmdebüt in „Boston Kickout“ (1996) wurde Simm beim Filmfestival von Valencia als bester Schauspieler ausgezeichnet.
