Turhan Bey, eigentlich Turhan Gilbert Selahettin Şahultavi, war ein österreichischer Schauspieler und Fotograf. Der Sohn eines türkischen Diplomaten und einer tschechischen Jüdin emigrierte nach dem Einmarsch der Nationalsozialisten in Wien über die Schweiz und Paris in die USA. Bei einer Aufführung an seiner damaligen Schule wurde er von Talentsuchern des Studios Warner Brothers entdeckt und 1941 für den Film Mr. X auf Abwegen engagiert. Daraufhin legte sich Şahultavi den Künstlernamen Turhan Bey zu und stand fortan bei den Universal Studios unter Vertrag, meist als europäischer Adeliger oder geheimnisvoller Orientaler. 1953 beschloss er, seine Filmkarriere in den USA zu beenden und in seine Heimat Österreich zurückzukehren. Nach einem Auftritt in der Fernsehserie SeaQuest DSV erlebte er eine Renaissance im US-Fernsehen nach 40 Jahren Drehpause, es folgten eine Reihe von internationalen Film- und Fernsehrollen wie in zwei Episoden der Science-Fiction-Serie Babylon 5.
