Paul Reubens (eigentlich Paul Rubenfeld) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler und Designer, der ab den 1980er-Jahren vor allem durch seine Verkörperung der komödiantischen Figur Pee-Wee Herman bekannt wurde. Reubens wuchs in Florida auf, wo seine Eltern einen Laden führten. Er spielte als Kind an einem Theater. Als Schauspieler debütierte er in der Fernsehkomödie Things We Did Last Summer aus dem Jahr 1977. 1985 drehte Tim Burton nach einem Drehbuch von Reubens seinen ersten Langfilm Pee-Wee’s irre Abenteuer, der das 5-fache seiner Entstehungskosten einspielte und zum Kultfilm wurde. In den Jahren 1986 bis 1991 trat Reubens als Pee-wee Herman in der Fernsehserie Pee-wee’s Playhouse auf. Zu seinen größeren Rollen gehören jene in der Horrorkomödie Buffy – Der Vampir-Killer (1992) und in der Fantasykomödie Mystery Men (1999). In dem Film Pee-wee's Big Holiday trat er 2016 ein letztes Mal in der Rolle des Pee-Wee auf. Reubens wurde 1991 wegen der Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses festgenommen, nachdem er in einem Pornokino masturbiert hatte. Der Schauspieler zog sich in der nachfolgenden Zeit für eine Weile aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück. Im Jahr 2001 wurde er wegen Besitzes von Pornografie angeklagt.
