William Henry „Bill“ Cosby Jr. (* 12. Juli 1937; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) ist ein US-amerikanischer Komiker, Schauspieler, Autor, Fernsehproduzent und verurteilter Sexualstraftäter. Er begann seine Karriere als Stand-up-Comedian in Nachtclubs, bevor er eine Hauptrolle in der Action-Serie I Spy (1965–1968) erhielt. Nach verschiedenen Film- und Fernsehrollen kam Cosbys größter Erfolg, als er die beliebte Sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992) produzierte und darin die Hauptrolle spielte, die die Erfahrungen und das Heranwachsen einer afroamerikanischen Familie der oberen Mittelklasse thematisierte. Aufgrund dieser Rolle wurde er weithin als „America's Dad“ bezeichnet. Nach dem Ende der Serie produzierte und spielte er in mehreren anderen Serien und Filmen mit. Von den 1960er bis Anfang der 2000er Jahre war er ein gefragter Werbesprecher und warb für eine Reihe von Produkten, darunter Jell-O, Kodak-Filme, Ford, Texas Instruments und Coca-Cola. Cosby hat mehrere Auszeichnungen erhalten, darunter 5 Primetime Emmy Awards, 2 Daytime Emmy Awards, 9 Grammy Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, die Presidential Medal of Freedom für seinen Beitrag zum Fernsehen (2002) und mehrere Ehrendoktorwürden von Colleges und Universitäten. Viele seiner Auszeichnungen wurden aufgrund zahlreicher Vorwürfe sexueller Übergriffe aberkannt, darunter die Kennedy Center Honor 1998, der Mark Twain Prize for American Humor 2009 und alle bis auf 10 der 72 Ehrendoktorwürden. Die Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences schloss ihn im Mai 2018 als Mitglied der Actors Branch aus. Ungefähr 60 Frauen haben Cosby wegen verschiedener Formen sexueller Übergriffe in angeblichen Vorfällen zwischen 1965 und 2008 angeklagt. Diese Vorwürfe wurden 2014 öffentlich bekannt und führten zu mehreren Zivilklagen und strafrechtlichen Ermittlungen in Fällen, die noch nicht verjährt waren. Viele Fernsehsender, darunter NBC, nahmen Wiederholungen der Cosby Show aus ihrem Programm. Im April 2018 wurde Cosby wegen mehrfacher schwerer sexueller Nötigung zu einer Freiheitsstrafe von drei bis zehn Jahren verurteilt. Der Oberste Gerichtshof von Pennsylvania hob das Urteil im Juni 2021 auf, da gegen eine vorherige Vereinbarung der Staatsanwaltschaft verstoßen worden war, wonach Cosbys frühere Aussage in einem Zivilprozess – in der er zugab, Frauen, mit denen er Sex haben wollte, Drogen verabreicht zu haben – nicht im Strafprozess verwendet werden durfte. Er wurde später im selben Monat nach fast dreijähriger Haft aus dem Gefängnis entlassen und beteuert weiterhin seine Unschuld in allen Anklagepunkten.
