Raymond Griffith war einer der größten Stummfilmkomiker. Später arbeitete er hinter der Kamera als Autor und Produzent. Griffith wurde in Boston, Massachusetts, geboren. Er verlor seine Stimme früh und sprach fortan nur noch heiser und flüsternd. Griffith behauptete, dies sei die Folge davon, dass er als Kinderdarsteller jeden Abend in einem Bühnenmelodram aus vollem Hals schreien musste – andere vermuten eher eine Kinderkrankheit als Ursache. Obwohl einige seiner Komödien als Klassiker gelten, ist Griffith heute fast völlig vergessen. Viele seiner Hauptrollen sind längst verloren gegangen, doch sein wohl bekanntester Film ist „Hands Up!“ (1926), eine Bürgerkriegskomödie unter der Regie von Clarence G. Badger mit Mack Swain in einer der Hauptrollen, die 2005 in das National Film Registry aufgenommen wurde. Ebenfalls als Klassiker gilt Badgers Gaunerkomödie „Paths to Paradise“, von der in allen im Umlauf befindlichen Kopien die letzte Filmrolle fehlt. Wie viele Stummfilmkomiker trug er ein traditionelles Kostüm: Zylinder, weiße Fliege und Frack, oft ergänzt durch Umhang und/oder Spazierstock. Mit dem Aufkommen des Tonfilms endete Griffiths Schauspielkarriere. Doch bevor er sich von der Leinwand zurückzog, hatte er noch eine denkwürdige Rolle: Er spielte einen französischen Soldaten, der von Lew Ayres in Lewis Milestones Film „Im Westen nichts Neues“ (1930) getötet wird. Anschließend wechselte er zu Twentieth Century Fox und arbeitete dort als Drehbuchautor und Produzent. Griffith erstickte am 25. November 1957 im Alter von 62 Jahren im Masquers Club in Los Angeles, Kalifornien.
