Joel Schumacher (29. August 1939 in New York City, USA; † 22. Juni 2020 ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Filmregisseur, Drehbuchautor und Produzent. Er begann seine Karriere als Kostüm- und Produktionsdesigner, bevor er sich dem Filmemachen widmete. Schumacher wurde in den 1980er Jahren mit Filmen wie St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) und The Lost Boys (1987) bekannt. In den 1990er Jahren übernahm er die Regie für zwei Filme der Batman-Reihe: Batman Forever (1995) und Batman & Robin (1997). Letzterer wurde von Kritikern negativ aufgenommen, was seine Karriere beeinträchtigte. Dennoch führte er weiterhin Regie bei Filmen wie Nicht auflegen! (2002) und Das Phantom der Oper (2004), einer Adaption des Musicals von Andrew Lloyd Webber. Schumacher war bekannt für seinen visuellen Stil und seine Fähigkeit, junge Talente zu fördern. Er arbeitete mit Schauspielern wie Kiefer Sutherland, Colin Farrell und Matthew McConaughey zusammen. Seine letzten Arbeiten umfassten Episoden der Serie House of Cards (2013).
