Arthur Hiller Penn war ein US-amerikanischer Filmemacher, Theaterregisseur und Produzent. Er wurde dreimal für den Oscar als Beste Regie nominiert und gewann einen Tony Award. Neben anderen Auszeichnungen erhielt er auch Nominierungen für einen BAFTA Award, einen Golden Globe und zwei Primetime Emmy Awards. Penn erlangte erstmals Bekanntheit als Theaterregisseur und gewann einen Tony Award für die beste Regie eines Theaterstücks für „The Miracle Worker“, seine erste Oscar-Nominierung erhielt er für die Regie dessen Verfilmung „Licht im Dunkel“ von 1962. Sein Film „Bonnie und Clyde“ von 1967 gilt als Initiator der New-Hollywood-Bewegung. Erfolg bei Kritikern und an den Kinokassen erzielte er mit der Regie der Komödie „Alice im Wunderland“ (1969) und des revisionistischen Western „Little Big Man“ (1970).
