Walter Jack Gotell wurde 1924 als Walter Jacques Goettel in Bonn als Sohn jüdischer Eltern geboren. Er wuchs hauptsächlich in Berlin auf. Aufgrund des zunehmenden Einflusses des Nationalsozialismus wanderte die Familie 1938 nach Großbritannien aus, wo Walter 1948 die britische Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt. Aufgrund des Mangels an Nachwuchsschauspielern während des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann Gotell ab 1942 in Filmen zu arbeiten. Dank seiner Zweisprachigkeit spielte er Nazi-deutsche Bösewichte und Militärs, beispielsweise in „We Dive at Dawn“ (1943). Anfang der 1950er Jahre übernahm er zunehmend etablierte Rollen und trat in „African Queen“ (1951), „The Red Beret“ (1953 für Albert R. Broccoli), „Eiskalt in Alexandrien“ (1958), „Die Kanonen von Navarone“ (1961), „Der Weg nach Hongkong“ (1962), „Lord Jim“ (1965), „Schwarzer Sonntag“ (1977), „Boys from Brazil“ (1978) und „Explosion in Kuba“ (1979) auf. Seine erste Rolle in der James-Bond-Filmreihe spielte er 1963 in „Liebesgrüße aus Moskau“. Ab den späten 1970er Jahren spielte er in der Serie immer wieder die Rolle des KGB-Generals Anatol Gogol, beginnend mit „Der Spion, der mich liebte“ (1977). Gotell bekam die Rolle des Gogol aufgrund seiner Ähnlichkeit mit dem ehemaligen Chef der sowjetischen Geheimpolizei Lawrentij Beria. Die Figur kehrte zurück in „Moonraker – Im tödlichen Kampf“ (1979), „In tödlicher Mission“ (1981), „Octopussy“ (1983), „Im Angesicht des Todes“ (1985) und „Der Hauch des Todes“ (1987). Im Laufe seiner Karriere hatte Gotell auch zahlreiche Gastauftritte in Fernsehserien, darunter Knight Rider, Das A-Team, Airwolf, Akte X, Agentin mit Herz, MacGyver, Raumschiff Enterprise - Das nächste Jahrhundert, Miami Vice, Cagney & Lacey und The Saint.
