Carruth wurde in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, geboren. Er schrieb, führte Regie, produzierte und spielte eine der beiden Hauptrollen in seinem Independentfilm „Primer“ und komponierte die Musik. Der Film wurde 2004 beim Sundance Film Festival mit dem Großen Preis der Jury und dem Alfred P. Sloan Award ausgezeichnet. Als ehemaliger Softwareentwickler mit einem Bachelor-Abschluss in Mathematik brachte Carruth sein technisches Wissen in das Projekt ein.
