William Farnum (4. Juli 1876 in Boston, Massachusetts – 5. Juni 1953 in Hollywood, Kalifornien) war ein bedeutender Filmschauspieler. Als einer von drei Brüdern wuchs Farnum in einer Schauspielerfamilie auf. Sein Schauspieldebüt gab er im Alter von zehn Jahren in Richmond, Virginia, in einer Inszenierung von „Julius Caesar“, in der Edwin Booth die Titelrolle spielte. Seinen ersten großen Erfolg feierte er 1900 als Ben-Hur, nachdem er den ursprünglichen Darsteller Edward Morgan ersetzt hatte, der die Rolle 1899 uraufgeführt hatte. Zu den späteren Filmen, in denen Farnum mitwirkte, gehören das Kostümepos „Der Prinz von Indien“ (1906), „Die weiße Schwester“ (1909) mit Viola Allen, „Der kleinste Rebell“ (1911) mit seinem Bruder Dustin und der damals neunjährigen Mary Miles Minter sowie „Arizona“ (1913) mit Dustin und der Bühnenschönheit Elsie Ferguson. In „The Spoilers“ (1914) inszenierten Farnum und Tom Santschi eine legendäre Filmkampfszene, die sich über eine ganze Filmrolle erstreckte. 1930 coachten Farnum und Santschi Gary Cooper und William Boyd für die Kampfszene in der Neuverfilmung von „The Spoilers“. Weitere Schauspieler, die von Farnums Kampfszene beeinflusst wurden, waren Milton Sills und Noah Beery (1922) sowie Randolph Scott und John Wayne (1942). Von 1915 bis 1925 widmete Farnum sein Leben dem Film. Als er zu einer der größten Sensationen Hollywoods avancierte, gehörte er auch zu den bestbezahlten Schauspielern und verdiente 10.000 Dollar pro Woche. Farnums Stummfilme, der Western „Drag Harlan“ (1920) und das Drama-Abenteuer „If I Were King“ (1921), stammen aus seiner Zeit bei Fox Films. Farnum hat einen Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame. Er war der jüngere Bruder des Schauspielers Dustin Farnum. Er hatte noch einen Bruder, Marshall Farnum, der Stummfilmregisseur war und 1917 starb.
