James „Jim“ Arthur Lovell Jr. war ein ehemaliger NASA-Astronaut und Kapitän a. D. der US-Marine. Bekannt wurde er vor allem als Kommandant der Apollo-13-Mission, die auf dem Weg zum Mond einen kritischen Fehler erlitt, aber dank des Einsatzes der Besatzung und der Missionskontrolle sicher zur Erde zurückgebracht werden konnte. Lovell war auch Pilot des Kommandomoduls von Apollo 8, der ersten Apollo-Mission, die in die Mondumlaufbahn eintrat. Er ist Träger der Congressional Space Medal of Honor und der Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lovell ist einer von nur 24 Menschen, die zum Mond geflogen sind, der erste von nur drei Menschen, die zweimal zum Mond flogen, und der einzige, der zweimal dort war, ohne zu landen. Er war außerdem der erste Mensch, der viermal ins All flog.
